Values Alignment

Values determine how a company acts in pursuit of purpose, while personal core values define how to support what we care about. A small number of individual core values may remain stable from childhood through adulthood; however, we have derived values that shift over time because of interests, trauma, life experiences, and groups. In one study published in the American Journal of Political Science, researchers found that it's not that your moral views determine which group you belong to; it's the other way around. The lead researchers said, "We will switch our moral compass depending on how it fits with what we believe politically."

Nonprofits and organizations that share values help people feel essential to the organization's mission and vision. Values alignment is instrumental to growing social capital, which is imperative in creating trust in institutions. Trust impacts the health of communities and the strength of a democracy.

Currently, the erosion of trust is at an all-time high, creating a crisis in mental health and a threat to the viability of public good organizations - 48% of Gen Z feel lonely, and 49% don’t trust orgs. Spotlight helps people and organizations identify values to answer the question, "How can I help?"
